Volume units explained

Liters (L)

The liter is exactly one cubic decimeter, or 1,000 cubic centimeters. It is the everyday metric unit of liquid volume.

Milliliters (mL)

The milliliter is one thousandth of a liter and is exactly equal to one cubic centimeter.

US gallons (gal)

The US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters, or 231 cubic inches. It is about 17% smaller than the imperial gallon.

US fluid ounces (fl oz)

The US fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 milliliters — one sixteenth of a US pint. It measures volume, not weight.

US cups (cup)

The US customary cup is 8 US fluid ounces, or about 236.59 milliliters. US nutrition labels use a slightly different “legal cup” of exactly 240 mL.

US quarts (qt)

A US quart is a quarter of a US gallon, or two pints — about 946.35 millilitres. It is the standard size for milk cartons and motor oil in the United States.

US pints (pt)

A US pint is 16 US fluid ounces, or about 473.18 millilitres. The imperial pint used in British pubs is larger, at 568.26 millilitres.

Cubic meters (m³)

A cubic meter is the SI unit of volume, equal to exactly 1,000 litres. It is the unit used for water supply, concrete and freight volume.

Cubic feet (ft³)

A cubic foot is about 28.32 litres. It is the standard unit for natural gas billing, appliance capacity and shipping volume in the United States.

US tablespoons (tbsp)

A US tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, or about 14.79 milliliters.

US teaspoons (tsp)

A US teaspoon is one third of a tablespoon, or about 4.93 millilitres. Medicine doses and baking recipes both use it, and it is the smallest standard kitchen measure.
