Bits per second (bit/s)

The bit per second is the base unit of data rate: one binary digit transferred each second.

Kilobits per second (kbit/s)

A kilobit per second is 1,000 bits per second. Dial-up modems topped out at 56 kbps; audio bitrates are still quoted this way.

Megabits per second (Mbit/s)

Megabits per second is how internet providers advertise connection speed. Divide by 8 to get megabytes per second.

Gigabits per second (Gbit/s)

A gigabit per second is one billion bits per second. Gigabit Ethernet and fibre broadband tiers are rated in Gbps.

Kilobytes per second (kB/s)

A kilobyte per second is 8,000 bits per second. Download managers report progress in bytes per second, while providers advertise bits per second.

Megabytes per second (MB/s)

Megabytes per second is what download managers display. Multiply by 8 to get the megabits per second your provider advertises.
